Depression The Four Most Common Hidden Causes

Four Hidden Causes of Depression: Adrenal Exhaustion, Reactive Hypoglycemia, Food Sensitivities and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Depression is not a new disease but there are still a lot that is unknown about the exact cause and appropriate treatment of the disorder. Depression can be difficult to distinguish due to the various symptoms. Adrenal fatigue, reactive hypoglycemia, food sensitivities and chronic fatigue syndrome are all very uncommon disorders that can cause depression. Most people have probably never heard of these disorders. Many physicians do not even understand their exact relationship to depression.

The adrenal glands are located over your kidneys. The adrenal glands are responsible for secreting a variety of hormones. Common hormones are epinephrine, testosterone and cortisol. When individuals are under extreme stress adrenal fatigue can occur.

Extreme stress can be brought on due to financial trouble, the loss of a loved one, living in an abusive relationship, etc.. The main stress hormone in the body is known as cortisol. Your body needs cortisol to adapt to stress and at the same time if stress levels remain high excessive cortisol is then damaging to your body. It actually ages you faster from the inside out. Months or years of continuously producing high levels of cortisol the adrenal glands can start burning out slowing down or stopping the production of cortisol.

This decrease in cortisol level affect’s the body’s ability to keep up with the stress level. This is called adrenal fatigue. A few problems that can occur are extreme tiredness, sever exhaustion and low stamina. Individuals also generally feel unable to cope with stressful situations that may arise and often feel depressed. Some people also have problems with low blood pressure and digestion. Adrenal fatigue is a common reason why people recover poorly from surgeries an infection. It is also a common factor in chronic pain especially back pain. The disorder is reversible in most cases. How long it takes to reverse and what is involved depends on which of the four stages of adrenal fatigue you have as well as other health complications.

Hypoglycemia is when your blood sugar drops too low. When your body’s blood sugar repeatedly drops down too low especially after consuming carbohydrates this is generally referred to as reactive hypoglycemia. Excessive insulin is produced and this over production causes the sugar levels in the body to drop drastically. Some people experience symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness or lightheadedness. In addition they may also be extremely irritable and suffer from headaches, tremors and depression.

This disorder does have some simple treatment options you can try. Most physicians recommend that patients eat a small meal or snack at least every 3 hours and exercise regularly. Stick to low glycemic index foods and limit sugar and carbs in your daily diet. Expand our diet and include healthy meats, poultry and fish. Ins important to identify the reasons why you have this condition. Is it a result of diet and stress or are there other metabolic issues involved.

Food sensitivities are often over looked when a person presents with symptoms of depression. Eating foods that you are sensitive too may take 24-72 hours before you feel the negative effects. And common symptoms are fatigue, depression and brain fog. There are many options for identifying and ruling out the foods you are reactive too. Frequently the elimination of the reactive foods for 8-12 weeks completely reverses the depression cause by food sensitivities.

In many cases your doctor may not diagnose you with chronic fatigue syndrome. Chronic fatigue does have many of the same symptoms as adrenal fatigue and reactive hypoglycemia. Just as the name says, if you suffer from this disorder you probably experience severe fatigue. Muscle aches and pains, headaches and restless sleep are also common symptoms. Some people have problems with night sweats and nausea.

Your doctor may try and treat you with depression medication but in some cases he may offer you other options. Most patients are encouraged to exercise and establish a healthy sleep pattern. Special medicines may help with joint pain and problematic headaches. Each disorder can cause depression but many people can benefit more from lifestyle changes and protocols to reverse metabolic damage rather than depression medicine. The common drugs used to treat depression may not always help these problems.

Finding the light out of Depression

Six Easy Steps to Create and Achieve Your New Years Resolutions to Feel Renewed, Revitalized and Recharged in 2011!

It is a popular tradition to create New Year’s Resolutions, however, many people never truly achieve their most important Resolutions for the year. I invite you to consider a different way of identifying and pursuing your New Years Resolutions that can bring you closer to achieving them than ever before!

This process will work for any type of goals: weight loss, increase income, improve current relationship, etc. and the end result will be achieving your goals and feeling Renewed, Revitalized and Recharged in 2011!

I have found that most people don’t stick to their goals and New Years Resolutions because often they pick targets that require a lot of energy and many run out of energy before getting very far. The concept of Energy is rarely taken into account regarding New Years Resolutions and Goals setting, yet it’s the critical element. There are many different types of Energy that are necessary in order to be, feel, and fulfill goals effectively in life.

The Positive Energy Wheel is a six step program I created meant to increase the flow of Positive Energy felt in life used to achieve your goals. The more Positive Energy you have, the greater the ability to adapt and cope with changes in addition to being capable to make the changes you want in life. Without enough Positive Energy in life you will encounter more resistance and difficult making your life the way you want it and being able to deal with the world when not everything goes your way.

The Positive Energy Wheel

Step 1: To ask yourself this first question and to answer it honestly:

“How Full of ‘Positive Energy’ do I feel I am in the following areas of my life?”

(Rank each of the areas below from a -10 to a +10.)

Mental: Ability to focus, concentrate, and problem solve.

Emotional: Ability to tell the honest truth and fully express yourself without hurting yourself or others, and to cope effectively with stress without alcohol, drugs, prescriptions, or compulsive behavior.

Relationships: Ability to give and receive love, to compromise, to cooperate, to be patient, and to forgive.

Spiritual: Ability to trust and have faith in God or a Power greater than yourself, to let go of controlling things you can’t control or are none of your business, and to take appropriate action on things within your control that you are responsible for.

Physical: Ability to resist illnesses or infections; to rest, relax and sleep; to move pain-free; to breathe, eat, digest and eliminate without complications; to wake up rested and maintain energy through out the day without medication or stimulants, and to enjoy yourself sexually.

Financial: Ability to generate an income to support yourself and your family and to responsibly manage your income and expenses.

Step 2: Draw a large circle with six pie wedges on a sheet of paper with a pencil.

Step 3: Write an area of your life in each section along the outer circle.

Step 4: Put a large dot in each wedge to represent your ranking score for the Positive Energy in each area of your life. A +10 is at the outer edge of the circle and a -10 is at the center of the circle.

Step 5: Connect the dots between each area of your life and erase the lines making the wedges outside your shape.

The point of this exercise is to determine what areas of your life are draining you of your life energy and in which ones you have abundant energy. I invite you to look at the circle you drew, what do you see? If you rolled this Wheel on the ground it would probably get stuck and stop turning in the areas with the lowest Positive Energy.

The areas of lowest positive energy in your life often determine the difficulty you face while rolling with change in your environment and how you can change your life. You will get faster and more meaningful changes by increasing the Positive Energy in the areas where the circle shows it is the lowest.

Any area ranking less than a +6 would not feel satisfactory to anyone; it produces a constant feeling of dissatisfaction. However, any area ranking a zero or less would feel as if you were drained of your life energy and personal power. These low energy areas will likely undermine your pursuit of meaningful New Years Resolutions or Goals that have no direct target on reversing areas of your life with the least energy!!!

Here is a common example: Fred is a businessman and he ranked his life energy as follows:

Mental: -2

Emotional: 0

Relationships: 4

Spiritual: 3

Physical: 5

Financial: 4

Fred wants to improve his financial situation and increase his income, which he ranked a +4. However, he ranked Mental as a -2 due to the fact he can’t focus or concentrate well and additionally gave Emotional a 0 because Fred is not coping with stress well.

I agree that raising the Positive Energy in his financial area to a +6 or higher would certainly be beneficial however Fred is less likely to achieve his financial goals because he scored relatively low in the Mental and Emotional areas. Fred would ultimately feel that that he can’t deal with the overwhelming stress level of achieving his real goal. Someone with a higher score in the Mental and Emotional areas would be more inclined to perceive the same situation as less stressful or difficult which would lead them to realize their goal.

In this case Fred would be better off working on goals that would improve the Mental and Emotional areas of his life before taking on his goal to become more financially successful. As he focuses on plugging up the serious energy drains in these areas he will then have more Positive Energy that can be used to achieve his ultimate goal.

Now that you’ve seen an example to illustrate the logic behind this exercise, let’s go to the last step of this process.

Step 6:

A. Pick the area of your life ranked with the lowest Positive Energy. If you have two or more ranked the same, pick the one that gives you the most stress.

B. List and write out specifically what the problems you are having in this area.

C. Rank them from the most distressful and draining to the least distressful and draining.

D. Put a square around the ones you can do by yourself and would honestly be willingly to work.

E. Circle the ones you will need professional assistance with and feel that you can’t achieve on your own.

F. Pick the top two that you feel you can change right now. Make sure one is something that you can do yourself and the other requires professional assistance.

These are now your top two New Years Resolutions for 2011! Congratulations!

If you only accomplish these two things in 2011 you will have significantly increased the Positive Energy in your life and your ability to be more effective in tackling other problems. When you follow this process as prescribed you will systematically notice feeling more Renewed, Revitalized and Recharged as you increase the Positive Energy in more areas of your life!

If you are more ambitious, after you resolve one of these two problems pick the next challenge you feel ready to tackle. Make sure you maintain a balance between one that you can do by yourself and one that requires professional assistance. Keep repeating this process until you resolve all the problems on this list from Step 6 and if you are up to it, repeat this process for all areas of low energy and prepare to feel better than you ever have in life!

Are the Holiday Gifts and Presents You’re Giving Causing Stress?

The holidays are two months away and you are problably making your holiday shopping list. I hope this advice will make your holiday gifting a little easier. Or at least help you make more conscious choices.

When you give a gift, don’t you want the person receiving it to feel good about it? Unfortunately, it’s very easy to give gifts that aren’t appreciated and inadvertantly cause people stress.

One of the best ways to avoid this problem is to not give food as presents. Please let me explain:

Holiday foods are typically high in refined carbohydrates, high in fat and/or high in sodium. And they taste great so it’s very difficult for most people to exercise meaningful portion control.

Obesity is an epidemic. More and more people are concerned about thier weight and they worry about gaining more weight over the holidays. If your friends stress about thier weight, don’t give them foods they can’t resist.

Type 2 Diabetes is another growing epidemic and millions of Americans don’t even know they have it. Your innocent gift may be causing serious problems for an undiagnosed diabetic. If you suspect that a friend or loved one has Type 2 Diabetes encourage them to get tested.

Another epidemic in America is food allergies. There are basically three types of allergies:

1. Severe allergies which may cause death;

2. Immediate allergies which are not life threatning but makes you feel lousy right away and

3. Delayed allergies which takes 24 to 8 hours before you start to feel lousy.

Friends who have severe allergies will easily tell they have them.  However, people who have immediate allergies may not tell you. And there are millions of Americans with delayed food allergies and don’t know it. I gaurantee you that at least 80 % of people with chronic health problems have delayed food allergies and don’t know it. Common symptoms of delayed food allergies is fatigue, depression, inflamation and brain fog and most doctors completely over look these symptoms.

A very common food allergy that many people don’t know they have is an allergy to gluten. It’s commonly called Gluten intolerance. Gluten is found in wheat, barley and rye. Celiac disease is a degenerative disease resulting from years of ingesting gluten when you have gluten intolerance.

Many people have gluten sensivity, which means they react to it like an allergy, however, they have not done enough damage to thier bodies yet to get a postive test for Celiac disease.

There are many practical and natural solutions to reversing the damge of chronic allergies.

So statistically the odds are not in your favor when it comes to giving food as presents during the holidays.

I know the  cookie, fruit cake and holiday sausage manufacturers won’t be happy with my advice and that’s o.k.. They are in the business of selling those items and I’m in the business of promoting great health and peace of mind.

How To Deal with the Emotional Trauma of Your Financial Problems

People find it easier to discuss their sexual problems than their money problems.  For a variety of reasons financial problems is a very charged topic. Whether it’s an $80,000 or $800,000 problem, dealing with your money issues can stir a range of feelings from overwhelm, fear and shame to depression, intense grief and rage, especially when your lifestyle and security feels threatened.

For business owners and entrepreneurs to survive and thrive in the current and up-coming economic changes, you will require a specific set of skills and mindset. The most mentally and emotionally adaptable will be able to recover the quickest from financial loss. These are the people who are willing and able to deal with reality as it is, not as they think it should be.

The business owners and entrepreneurs who aren’t able to or refuse to accept what happened to them financially (serious drop in revenue, bankruptcy, loss of investments, etc.) and are unable to direct their emotions to productive behavior are likely to prolong their suffering and delay their recovery.

The experience of trauma, especially financial trauma can easily overwhelm and immobilize even the most practical person. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary Definition of Trauma is:

b: a disordered psychic or behavioral state resulting from severe mental or emotional stress or physical injury

c: an emotional upset <the personal trauma of a business owner or entrepreneur who is not living up to his own expectations

Here are the three basic steps for dealing with trauma:

The first step in dealing with financial trauma is to recognize when you’re feeling traumatized and overwhelmed. The main symptom to confirm you’re feeling traumatized and overwhelmed is the “Psychological Brain Freeze”. The “Psychological Brain Freeze” is when you just keep focusing on/thinking/talking about what happened to you. You’re unable to think clearly and creatively. Your thoughts and emotions are dominating you! You can’t change the internal dialogue in your head. You’re stuck mentally and emotionally and can’t really move on.

While in this mental state your judgment becomes impaired and your problem solving ability significantly diminishes. You’re not mentally and emotionally adaptable. Rarely does this psychological state produce viable practical sustainable solutions to your problems. As a business owner/entrepreneur your greatest asset is your mind. You make money through the application of your ideas. When your ability to generate strategies and implement them shuts down, you’re dead in the water.

The second step is to get out of denial. The real danger of staying in denial is the fact that when you’re traumatized and stuck, you’re more likely to fail at your attempts to resolve your problems, perhaps causing bigger financial problems for yourself and your family.

The third step is to identify and specifically list the physical symptoms that have been bothering you since all the financial stress began. For example: headaches, acid reflux, insomnia, fatigue, depression/anxiety, mental fog, back pain, etc.

This list will help you assess how well you are really handling your situation. This is called doing a reality check with your self.

Once you have the facts on how you’re really doing, you might find out you’re doing better than you thought or that you need a professional that specializes in treating trauma to help you recover. Either way you are better off knowing the truth.
